Read Chinese Text Aloud: Web Pages, PDFs, Docs and Email

By Uranbek Anarbaev · Published

Reading Chinese aloud is slower than reading it silently, which is exactly why listening helps: you hear every character. This guide shows how to have Chinese text read aloud from a web page, a document, an email, or a pasted passage, and what to do when the text will not load.

The quickest way: select and listen

In Chrome, select the Chinese text, right-click, and choose Listen with Chinese TTS. A reading panel opens and plays the passage.

Install the extension from the Chrome Web Store, select a passage on any page, and open the context menu. To read an entire page, click the toolbar icon, or use Ctrl+Shift+Y (Command+Shift+Y on a Mac). The panel highlights the sentence being read and shows pinyin above the characters, which you can switch off.

Where it works

It works on ordinary web pages and in Google Docs, Slides, Drive, Gmail, Outlook, Kindle samples, ChatGPT and Claude.ai.

Chrome blocks extensions on its own internal pages and on some protected destinations such as the Web Store. If the panel does not open, test a public news article first. Reload a tab that was already open when you installed the extension.

Control the pace

Speed runs from 0.5x to 2x, and you can step through the passage sentence by sentence with Alt+Left and Alt+Right.

Use 1x or 1.25x to follow an article, 0.75x for dense sentences, and go back one sentence when you lose track. Alt+P pauses and resumes, so you can stop to look up a word without losing your place.

When the text does not read

Most failures are page restrictions or text that is not real text, such as an image, canvas, or embedded document.

First reload the page and check that the extension is enabled in chrome://extensions. If the text lives in an image, upload the image to the website reader, which recognises simplified Chinese and English text in the browser. If a page swaps its content while you listen, select the passage again.

Reading is limited to 3,000 characters per day without signing in and 5,000 with a Google account. Speech is generated online, so there is no offline mode.

A reading routine for long articles

Read a few paragraphs at 1x with pinyin off, replay the sentences you missed with pinyin on, and write down the words you had to look up.

Listening to a long Chinese article from start to finish is tiring and teaches less than a short routine repeated often. Pick an article that interests you, listen to the first paragraph at normal speed, and note the sentences you did not follow. Go back to those with pinyin on at 0.75x, look up the unfamiliar words, and listen once more at normal speed. The highlighted sentence and the sentence-by-sentence shortcuts make this loop quick enough to keep up daily.

If you also want to check meaning, switch on sentence translation in Chrome 138 or newer. It translates from Chinese to English on your device and appears above each sentence, so you can confirm your understanding without leaving the page.

Privacy and what is sent

The text you ask to be read is sent to the speech service to generate the audio, so avoid confidential material.

Speech is generated online, which means the selected text leaves your browser to produce the audio. The optional sentence translation is the exception: it runs on your device through Chrome. Review the privacy policy before reading sensitive messages or documents.
